Abstract

This study analyzes the presence of visual identity in the logos of Palestinian universities, given that a logo is one of the most important elements capable of embodying institutional identity and representing its academic and cultural mission. The importance of this topic is highlighted by the increasing trend among educational institutions to build a comprehensive visual identity that enhances their communicative presence and supports their distinction within the local environment. The study primarily aims to reveal the extent to which Palestinian university logos express visual identity, analyzing their visual and semantic components in terms of colors, symbols, fonts, and design styles, and linking these elements to the cultural and national references upon which these universities are based. The study adopted the descriptive-analytical method due to its ability to examine visual phenomena and extract their meanings. It also utilized a questionnaire developed by the researcher after reviewing previous literature. The questionnaire consisted of 29 items measuring the presence of visual identity elements in the logos. A purposive sample of ten logos from Palestinian universities located in the West Bank was selected to obtain a diverse visual representation that allowed for analysis without redundancy or unhelpful structural similarity. The results showed that most university logos feature a clear presence of national, cultural, and religious symbols, and that a traditional, seal-like style dominates the design of many of them, with limited use of modern design trends. Furthermore, there is a disparity in color and typographic consistency among the logos, and a near-complete absence of contemporary institutional fonts. These findings highlight the need to develop visual identities for Palestinian universities that enhance their modernity and communicative value.
