Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is a treatment procedure that uses electric pulses to alleviate pain. Two pads are hooked up to the tens machine and are placed on the skin in strategic paths to intersect the nerves that are causing the pain. As the electric currents enter the body they cause the muscles to contract. This process will help to alleviate the injury , the frequency and intensity of the low voltage electric wavelengths that enter the body can vary depending on the severity of the injury and the pain of the patient. The electric pulses that are sent through the pads do not cause excessive pain because the machine can block the pain signals or cause the body to produce natural pain killers. This treatment is mostly used for pain that occurs in the nerves, but is also commonly used to relieve muscle, bone , and joint problems as well.en_US
